Circa 1880s. Original stereocard on yellow boards. Board dimensions 7 x 3 1/2 inches, photograph dimensions 5 3/4 x 3 inches. Minor foxing, photo is remarkably clear. Although there is no title, this image is a copy of one taken by Frank Jay Haynes (1853-1921), the official photographer for the Northern Pacific Railroad. The photo shows railroad workers with shovels and wheelbarrows leveling a section of Eagle Butte, near Glendive, Montana. The Northern Pacific Railway is a major railway that runs from Minnesota to the Pacific Coast. It was approved by Congress in 1864, began construction in 1870, and reached Montana by 1880.. Book.
